This past weekend, I was able to have a girl’s weekend with some friends (and adopters of Jimmy Kool, one of my first foster horses) at the Rolex Kentucky 3-Day Event. On Friday night, we attended the Thoroughbreds For All event put on by New Vocations and the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP). The $35 ticket included a delicious buffet dinner of southern style food (think friend chicken, pulled pork BBQ, roasted potatoes, peach pies and more), along with a program showing off some of New Vocations’ available horses AND some of the fabulous OTTBs that are now famous in their new careers. But the horses weren’t the only stars. Because the event was held over Rolex weekend, a handful of the Rolex competitors who would be riding cross country the next day were there as well. Among these were the sidelined Aussie rider Boyd Martin (broken leg) and Lainey Ashker (her mount Anthony Patch had an abscess). Along with Rolex riders were a collection of extremely knowledgeable Thoroughbred folks including RRP founder Steuart Pittman, pedigree expert Jen Roytz, Olympic dressage judge, rider and trainer Linda Zang, Rolex veteran Cathy Weischhoff, the winning-est female jockey in the US, Rosie Napravnik, Kentucky Derby winning trainer Graham Motion and racehorse owner Ken Ramsey (owner of Kitten’s Joy, the 2013 #1 sire in America and earner of over $10 million).
